What SAP services cover
SAP describes SAP S/4HANA as its next-generation cloud ERP system, offered with public and private options and built on in-memory processing (SAP S/4HANA). SAP also describes S/4HANA as an ERP system written specifically for SAP HANA, which it defines as a column-oriented, in-memory database that runs advanced analytics alongside high-speed transactions in a single system (SAP, What is SAP HANA). This page's implementation service is named for HANA and delivers S/4HANA implementations.
SAP services at Sthenos follow a programme from advice to operation: consulting and development before and during implementation, S/4HANA implementations designed for performance, visibility and real-time insight, hosting that reduces infrastructure overhead, and application management that keeps SAP applications stable, optimized and aligned with business needs over time. For ERP work outside SAP, see our ERP solution page.
S/4HANA sits on the HANA database because SAP writes it for HANA; the hosting service supports the environment both run in. Each layer carries only terms this page's four services use.
The dates SAP has published for SAP ERP and S/4HANA
On 4 February 2020 SAP announced a maintenance commitment for SAP S/4HANA until the end of 2040. In the same announcement it set mainstream maintenance for the core applications of SAP Business Suite 7, which include SAP ERP 6.0, until the end of 2027, followed by optional extended maintenance until the end of 2030 (SAP News, 4 February 2020).
- 2020SAP announces its maintenance commitments, on 4 February.
- 2027End of mainstream maintenance for the core applications of SAP Business Suite 7, SAP ERP 6.0 among them.
- 2030End of the optional extended maintenance for those applications.
- 2040End of SAP's maintenance commitment for SAP S/4HANA.
The SAP programme, and where each service acts
The four services on this page line up as one programme, from planning and proof to implementation, hosting and ongoing management. The figure places every item each service lists under the stage it belongs to.
Figure 1. The SAP programme, and what each service on this page does in it
Caption: the four stages are this page's four service cards in the order a programme uses them, and every item under a stage is one that card lists, shortened to fit. No stage is given a duration, because this page publishes none.
- Plan and proveSAP consulting and development: pre-implementation planning and advisory, solution and landscape assessment, business process consulting, proof of concept and validation, and package selection and a roadmap.
- ImplementSAP S/4HANA implementations designed for performance, visibility and real-time insight, with minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
- HostSecure, scalable cloud hosting and managed support, to reduce infrastructure overhead while improving reliability and operational efficiency.
- Run and improveFlexible SAP AMS models that keep applications stable and optimized, for continuous improvement and cost control.
SAP hosting vs SAP application management services
The two services on the right of the figure are separate services on this page. Hosting supports the SAP environment; application management keeps the SAP applications in it stable, optimized and aligned with business needs over time.
SAP hosting and support
The environment- SAP cloud hosting services.
- SAP HANA cloud support.
- BI and analytics hosting.
- Managed SAP infrastructure services.
- Aim: lower infrastructure overhead, better reliability and operational efficiency.
SAP application management (AMS)
The applications- Production support and monitoring.
- Enhancements, functional updates and additional module support.
- Change request management.
- Patch updates and version management.
- Aim: continuous improvement and SAP cost optimization.
What moves the cost of an SAP programme
This page publishes no price band for an SAP programme, and none is invented here. What it does carry is the sitewide hourly band below and the drivers that move any estimate, and where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price for a defined outcome, with a costed roadmap before any build starts.
The rate depends on the seniority and mix of the team, which is the stated reason the band has a range at all. Hosting and application management are ongoing services, so ask for them to be priced up front rather than sold back after go-live.
What you receive from an SAP engagement
- A package selection and a roadmap from SAP consulting, before implementation begins.
- A proof of concept and validation, where the programme calls for one.
- Environment and solution architecture for the S/4HANA implementation.
- A written scope and a costed roadmap before any build starts.
- Architecture and a security posture you can put in front of a reviewer.
- Monitoring, maintenance and a roadmap after launch, through hosting and AMS.
What to ask any SAP services company
Four of these are the questions our software development services page tells buyers to ask before they sign, the last comes from our Salesforce consulting page, and the fifth is the point this page adds.
- Who writes the code? Named engineers, their seniority, and whether they are employed or subcontracted.
- Where are the engineers physically? Data residency, contract terms and your own compliance review all depend on the answer.
- What documentation is a contractual deliverable? Knowledge that left with the vendor is what a client discovers too late.
- What happens when the estimate is wrong? Every estimate is wrong somewhere, and the answer tells you how the relationship will actually work.
- Which of hosting and application management are in the quote? They are separate services on this page, and a quote that stops at go-live leaves both out.
- Show me the data reconciliation from your last migration. It is the only proof a migration worked.
