The AWS terms that decide an engagement
AWS describes its own platform in its overview whitepaper: "Amazon Web Services offers a broad set of global cloud-based products including compute, storage, databases, analytics, networking, mobile, developer tools, management tools, IoT, security, and enterprise applications: on-demand, available in seconds, with pay-as-you-go pricing." Four terms decide most of the budget and the risk when you buy AWS cloud computing services through a consultancy, and each one below is AWS's own wording, linked so you can read the source rather than take ours.
AWS names two ways to create a landing zone: "a service-based landing zone using AWS Control Tower and a customized landing zone that you build", and notes that "each option requires a different level of AWS knowledge". The shared responsibility split also moves: the same AWS page says responsibilities "vary depending on the services used", so it is read per service rather than settled once for the whole estate.

How an AWS migration runs, step by step
An AWS cloud migration is a sequence of decisions rather than one event, and the steps below are the order we work in.
- A call, then a bounded discoveryWe schedule a call at your convenience, then run a short, bounded discovery, scoped per engagement.
- Assessment and roadmapA workload inventory with dependencies and a risk rating per workload, and a costed roadmap before committing to a build.

How much AWS consulting costs, and what moves the number
Two published figures frame an AWS engagement: an AWS assessment and roadmap typically runs $12,000 to $35,000, and a typical project runs $50,000 to $200,000. Migrations are priced per workload, and ongoing optimisation is a retainer.

The running bill is the other number. The recurring wins are rightsizing over-provisioned instances, buying reserved or savings-plan capacity for steady workloads, removing unattached storage, and shutting down non-production environments outside working hours.

What you get from AWS consulting
An AWS engagement produces some or all of the following, agreed in scope before it starts. The list is the one published on our cloud consulting page, applied to AWS.
- A current-state assessment. The workload inventory, what each one depends on, where the data lives, and which items have no owner.
- A target architecture. The account structure, the network layout and the managed services chosen, with the reasons written down.
- A landing zone design. Identity, network boundaries, logging, guardrails and the tagging standard, in a form that can be built from code.
- A migration plan. Workloads grouped into waves, each with a strategy, a rollback point and a downtime window agreed in advance.
- Infrastructure as code. The environment in Terraform, Ansible or CloudFormation, in your repository, so it can be rebuilt without us.
- Runbooks and an operations model. Who is paged, what they do, and what the monitoring is actually watching.
- A phased roadmap. What happens next, in what order, with the decisions that would change it named.
What to ask before you hire an AWS consultant
Whether you hire AWS developers into your own team or compare AWS consulting companies for the whole engagement, these questions work on us and on everyone else you are considering. They come from our cloud consulting page, where the reasoning behind each one is set out.
- Do you resell the infrastructure you are recommending? If an AWS consulting company answers yes, ask how the margin is disclosed and whether the recommendation would change without it.
- Whose name is on the cloud account and the repository? Anything other than yours is a dependency you did not agree to.
- What is your estimate of our monthly run rate after the move? A vendor who will only quote the project is quoting the smaller number.
- Which workload will you move first, and why that one? A credible answer names a low risk workload and explains what it is meant to prove.
- Show me the landing zone as code. If the environment was built by hand it cannot be rebuilt, reviewed or audited the same way twice.
- Which certifications do you hold, and which are your partner's? Audited and self declared are different claims, and so are a firm's own certifications and its partner's.
- What is your own attestation status? Ask for the report rather than accepting a logo. We will tell you plainly that we hold none.
- Who operates this after go live, and under what terms? A design nobody can run is not finished.
