Android Development Methodology
Requirement Analysis
We begin by working closely with stakeholders to understand business goals, target users, and technical requirements. This phase involves gathering functional and non-functional needs, defining user journeys, and documenting detailed specifications to ensure the Android application aligns precisely with business objectives.
Planning and Design
Based on the requirements, our team creates a structured development plan covering timelines, milestones, resources, and technical architecture. UI/UX design, data flow, system integrations, and scalability considerations are outlined to ensure a well-planned and efficient development process.
Development
In this phase, our Android developers build the application using Java or Kotlin, following industry best practices for clean, modular, and maintainable code. The development focuses on performance, security, seamless device integration, and consistent functionality across different Android versions.
Testing and Quality Assurance
Comprehensive testing is carried out to identify and resolve issues early. This includes unit testing, integration testing, functional testing, and compatibility testing across multiple Android devices and OS versions. Automated and manual testing methods are used to ensure stability, reliability, and performance.
Deployment and Launch
Once the application meets quality standards, we prepare it for release on the Google Play Store or other distribution platforms. This includes app signing, store listing optimization, compliance with Google guidelines, and final deployment support to ensure a smooth launch.
Maintenance and Support
After launch, we provide ongoing maintenance and support services. This includes monitoring app performance, fixing bugs, releasing updates, ensuring compatibility with new Android versions, and optimizing the application as user needs and business requirements evolve.
Android is an open source, Linux-based software stack created for a wide array of devices and form factors, in Google's own definition. Below, the eight services above are set against that platform: where an app sits on it, which language to build in, how a release reaches Google Play, what each stage of the methodology hands you, and what moves the cost.
From custom Android app development to wearable app development, each one listed above.
The development step builds in Java or Kotlin, and Google recommends starting a new Android app with Kotlin.
The deployment step prepares the app for the Google Play Store or other distribution platforms.

What Android is, and where your app sits on it
Google's platform documentation describes Android as a stack of layers, each built on the one below. An app your team commissions sits at the top, next to the system apps that ship with the device, and Google notes that apps included with the platform have no special status among the apps a user chooses to install. Google states that the entire feature set of the Android OS is available to an app through APIs written in the Java language, and that an app needing C or C++ code can reach some native libraries directly through the Android NDK.

Kotlin compared with Java on Android
The development step on this page builds in Java or Kotlin. Google announced at Google I/O 2019 that Android development would be increasingly Kotlin-first, recommends starting a new Android app with Kotlin, and continues to support its APIs from the Java programming language. Google also states that Kotlin and Java interoperate, so a project can hold as much or as little Kotlin as you want. Its own support table, restated:
| What Google supports | Java language | Kotlin |
|---|---|---|
| Platform SDK, Android Studio, Lint, AndroidX | Yes | Yes |
| Guided docs and API docs | Yes | Yes |
| AndroidX Kotlin-specific APIs (KTX, coroutines) | Not applicable | Yes |
| Online training and samples | Best effort | Yes |
| Multi-platform projects | No | Yes |
| Jetpack Compose | No | Yes |
| Compiler plugin support | No | Yes |
How a release reaches Google Play
The deployment step on this page names app signing, store listing optimization, compliance with Google guidelines and final deployment support. Android requires every APK to be digitally signed with a certificate before it is installed on a device or updated, and Google's overview for a new app on Google Play runs in five steps, shown across the top of Figure 2, with the two keys it depends on below them.
Figure 2. Five steps to a first release, and the two keys under Play App Signing
Caption: the roles of the two keys are Google's, from Android Developers, Sign your app (developer.android.com/studio/publish/app-signing), read 2026-09-11. Google also states that an app not opted in to Play App Signing that loses its signing key loses the ability to be updated.
What you receive at each stage

What an Android app costs, and what moves the number
Sthenos publishes two bands: an hourly rate band and a typical project band. Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price for a defined outcome, with a costed roadmap before any build starts. Ask any Android development firm for the same two figures and the scope behind them.
What goes into the estimate is the scope. These are the scope lines the services on this page name:
- Which of the eight services the project includes
- Android only, or a cross-platform app for Android and iOS
- Third-party APIs, payment gateways, social platforms and enterprise systems to integrate
- Wearable devices as well as phones
- The range of Android devices and OS versions to test against
- Maintenance and support after launch
What to ask Android app development companies
These questions apply to any Android application development agency or company, Sthenos included. Each comes from a step on this page or from Google's own documentation.
- Who will hold the upload key, the app signing key and the Google Play Console account? Google states that an app not opted in to Play App Signing that loses its signing key can no longer be updated.
- Will new code be written in Kotlin, and what happens to any Java already in the app? Google recommends Kotlin for new Android apps and supports Java alongside it.
- Which Android devices and OS versions will the app be tested on? Compatibility testing across devices and versions is a named part of the testing step.
- What documentation comes out of requirement analysis and planning? The methodology names detailed specifications and a development plan.
- Which third-party APIs and systems will the app integrate with, and whose accounts are they? Integrations are one of the eight services on this page.
- What does maintenance cover when a new Android version ships? Compatibility with new Android versions is part of maintenance and support.
Questions buyers ask about Android development
Do you build Android apps in Kotlin or Java?
Both. The development step on this page builds in Java or Kotlin. Google recommends starting a new Android app with Kotlin and continues to support its APIs from Java, and because the two interoperate, an existing Java app can take on Kotlin gradually.
Can I hire Android developers to work inside my own team?
Yes. If you would rather hire an Android developer to work in your process than hand over a whole project, our IT staff augmentation page lists iOS, Android, Kotlin and Flutter among the mobile engineers you can hire, working on your tools against your definition of done.
Can one app run on both Android and iOS?
Yes. Cross-platform app development is one of the eight services on this page: one application that runs on both Android and iOS. Our Flutter and Kotlin development pages describe cross-platform work in more detail.
Do you publish the app to Google Play?
Yes. The deployment step prepares the app for release on the Google Play Store or other distribution platforms, including app signing, store listing optimization, compliance with Google guidelines and final deployment support. Under Play App Signing, Google manages the app signing key and the developer keeps a separate upload key, so agree early which account holds each.
What does an Android app cost to build?
Our rates are $150 to $250 per hour, depending on the seniority and mix of the team, and a typical project runs $50,000 to $200,000. Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price for a defined outcome, with a costed roadmap before any build starts.
Do you build apps for wearable devices?
Yes. Wearable app development is one of the services on this page: lightweight applications for wearable devices, optimized for performance, usability and interaction across wearable ecosystems.
