Apple describes Swift as its programming language for all Apple platforms, and says every app on the App Store is reviewed by its experts against guidelines it publishes in five sections (developer.apple.com). Below, the ten services above are set against the path from an Xcode archive to the App Store, native iOS is compared with cross-platform, Apple's distribution routes are laid side by side, and each stage of the methodology is set out with what it hands you and what moves the cost.
From custom iOS app development to enterprise iOS development, each one listed above.
The development step builds in both, and Apple says Swift code coexists with Objective-C in one project.

How an iOS app reaches the App Store
The deployment and release step on this page manages the App Store submission process: app metadata and compliance checks against Apple's App Store guidelines. Apple's own Xcode documentation and TestFlight page set out the path a build takes, and the other routes the same archive can go.
Figure 1. From an Xcode archive to the App Store, and the other routes Apple lists
Caption: stages and routes are Apple's, from Distributing your app for beta testing and releases (developer.apple.com/documentation/xcode), the TestFlight page (developer.apple.com/testflight) and the App Review Guidelines (developer.apple.com/app-store/review/guidelines), read 2026-09-11.
What Apple asks for before App Review
App Store compliance and approval is named on this page, and Apple publishes its own list of what to check first. Under "Before You Submit", Apple asks developers to make sure of six things:
- The app is tested for crashes and bugs
- App information and metadata are complete and accurate
- Contact information is current, in case App Review needs to reach you
- App Review has full access, with an active demo account or a fully featured demo mode for account-based features
- Backend services are live and accessible during review
- Non-obvious features and in-app purchases are explained in the App Review notes
App Store, TestFlight and in-house distribution compared
Enterprise iOS development, one of the ten services on this page, builds apps for internal operations as well as for the App Store. Apple's Xcode documentation lists the routes a build can take:
| Route | Who gets the app | Apple's description |
|---|---|---|
| TestFlight and App Store | Testers, then App Store users | Distribute through TestFlight and submit to the App Store |
| TestFlight internal only | Your team | Restricts access to your team and prevents a development build from being submitted to the App Store |
| Ad Hoc | Registered devices | A limited number of devices you register in App Store Connect |
| Enterprise | Your organization | Members of your organization, if you are part of the Apple Developer Enterprise Program |
Native iOS or cross-platform: what each involves
A mobile software development company can build an iPhone app natively or from one codebase shared with Android. This page is the native route; our Flutter development page is the cross-platform one. Both are described from the vendors' own documentation, without a performance comparison.
Native iOS
What it involves- Built in Swift and Objective-C, as the development step on this page describes
- Designed against Apple's Human Interface Guidelines
- Integrates Apple services such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Siri and HealthKit
- A separate app, and codebase, for Android
Cross-platform with Flutter
What it involves- One Dart codebase for iOS and Android
- On iOS, Flutter's embedder is written in Swift and Objective-C
- An iOS API no package covers is reached through platform channels, in Swift or Objective-C
- Compiled to machine code for release, per Flutter's documentation
What you receive from iOS app development services, stage by stage
iOS application development services on this page run through eight stages, and the contact process on this site ends in a costed roadmap before a build is committed to. Each stage of the iOS development methodology above produces something you can hold it to:

What iOS app development costs, and what moves the number
Sthenos publishes two bands: an hourly rate band and a typical project band. Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price for a defined outcome, with a costed roadmap before any build starts.
Custom iOS app development services are quoted from scope. These are the scope lines the services on this page name:
- iPhone only, or iPhone and iPad
- Apple services to integrate, such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Siri and HealthKit
- Third-party APIs, payment gateways, analytics tools and backend systems
- A new app, or an upgrade or migration of an existing one
- Enterprise use: internal operations, secure data handling, large-scale usage
- Maintenance and support after launch
What to ask mobile application development companies about an iOS app
These questions apply to any iOS mobile app development company, Sthenos included. Each comes from a stage on this page or from Apple's own documentation.
- Whose Apple Developer Program account will the app be published from? Apple ties App Store Connect, TestFlight and the distribution methods to that membership.
- Which distribution route fits: App Store, TestFlight internal only, Ad Hoc or Enterprise? Apple lists each for a different audience.
- Who prepares the demo account, backend access and App Review notes Apple asks for? They are on Apple's own Before You Submit list.
- Which iPhone and iPad models and iOS versions will testing cover? The testing stage names multiple iOS devices and versions.
- Will new code be Swift, and what happens to existing Objective-C? Apple says the two coexist in one project.
- Which Apple services will the app use, such as iCloud, Apple Pay, Siri or HealthKit? Integration with the Apple ecosystem is named on this page.
Questions buyers ask about iOS development
Do you publish the app to the App Store?
Yes. App Store deployment is one of the ten services on this page: preparing assets and metadata and handling Apple's review requirements. Apple publishes its App Review Guidelines in five sections, Safety, Performance, Business, Design and Legal, and says its pre-submission checklist does not guarantee approval.
Can I hire iOS developers to join my own team?
Yes. If you would rather add iOS engineers to your own process than hand over the whole app, our IT staff augmentation page lists iOS among the mobile engineers you can hire, working on your tools against your definition of done.
Swift or Objective-C: which do you use?
Both appear in the development step on this page. Apple describes Swift as its programming language for all Apple platforms and says Swift code coexists alongside Objective-C files in the same project, so an existing Objective-C app can take on Swift for new features.
Can you build an iOS app for internal company use?
Yes. Enterprise iOS development on this page covers apps for internal operations, secure data handling and large-scale usage. Apple's Xcode documentation lists an Enterprise distribution option for members of an organization in the Apple Developer Enterprise Program, alongside App Store, TestFlight and Ad Hoc routes.
How is an iOS app beta tested before release?
With Apple's TestFlight, testers give feedback on a beta before it is published. A build is uploaded to App Store Connect and shared with internal testers from your team, and with external testers once App Review has approved the first build, according to Apple.
What does iOS app development cost?
Our rates are $150 to $250 per hour, depending on the seniority and mix of the team, and a typical project runs $50,000 to $200,000. Where the scope is clear we quote a fixed price for a defined outcome, with a costed roadmap before any build starts.
