What is generative AI?
Generative AI is artificial intelligence that creates new content, text, images, audio, or code, by learning patterns from huge amounts of existing data. Instead of just analyzing or sorting information, it produces something that was not there before.
It learns the underlying structure of its training data, the way words tend to follow words or shapes tend to form images, and uses that to generate fresh, original output on demand. The tools behind today’s AI assistants are built on exactly this.
The power is obvious. So are the limits: it can sound confident while being wrong, which is why human review still matters for anything that counts.
Related terms: conversational AI, agentic AI, AI agent.
How is generative AI different from traditional AI?
Traditional AI mostly analyzes or classifies existing data. Generative AI creates new content.
