What is a learning management system (LMS)?
A learning management system, or LMS, is software that delivers, tracks, and manages training and education in one place. It holds the course content, enrolls the learners, runs the assessments, and reports on who completed what.
Schools, universities, and companies all lean on one. Instead of scattered files and spreadsheets, an LMS gives learners a single place to study and gives administrators a clear view of progress, completion, and gaps.
Modern systems are cloud based, so a learner can pick up on a phone where they left off on a laptop, and a teacher can update a course once and have it reach everyone instantly.
Sthenos built a cloud based LMS for a K-12 education provider, with virtual classrooms, content management, and real time performance tracking built in.
Related terms: virtual classroom, SCORM, digital publishing platform.
Is an LMS the same as an online course?
No. A course is content. An LMS is the platform that delivers many courses and tracks every learner’s progress.
